The procrastination of the day :)
I went through the market this morning and was lucky to find that the guys I was looking for didn’t chicken out because of the cold — minus 17 °C. Frankly, I wouldn’t have blamed them if they hadn’t shown up — Anyway, every Tuesday there’s a cute Turkish couple setting up shop to sell dental tools of all things — go figure — I had already caught the odd tweezers and medical scisors a week previous and since I kinda live on LA time lately, can’t seem to close my eyes before 5:00 am for some reason, and since I end up spending half of the night watching tutorials on youtube, I decided, pushed by a sudden urge, to sculpt with Green Stuff — “Green Stuff” or “Duro” is a two part epoxy green clay used for sculpting Gamesworkshop armies — GW mostly do all their stuff with that apparently —
To sculpt with Green Stuff, since it sticks to everything and anything you have to use metal tools. To lubricate them — you need to or it can stick to the metal too — spit or water do the trick. I also heard a guy who was rubbing the greasy side of his nose now and again but that is just gross… Beside, I don’t have his nose to work with :)
For “figurines/miniatures sculptors” dental tools are just the common thing. You just have to customize them a tat, file end sand them down to the shape you prefer to work with and off you go little hippo.
Well… long story short, I got myself some. I was so excited with my new little set of tools, that after having spent 2 hours grinding them to and giving them some fine loving — the sandpaper kind — I started testing them on a piece of Fimo soft which is what I usually use for sculpting small things — and even though the tools were for that originally, I didn’t try on Green Stuff, I know, sometimes I don’t follow my own logic either — and made, just for the fun of it a “Cardinal de Richelieux” — 3.5cm to the eyes without any armature — I’ll develop that later on, it’s somewhat unorthodox but it’s quite handy and liberating technique for several reasons.
Anyway, loved the experience of working so small and will definitely do it again soon.
Hope you like it :)
Take care.
